Health, Safety and Environmental Specialist

Job Highlights

  • Ensure site compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements. 
  • Ensure site compliance with federal, provincial, regional and municipal legislations governing Environmental programs on site. This is includes but is not limited to National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI), Ontario EPS, Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Environmental Protection Act.
  • Managing process safety programs such as leading pre-start safety reviews, co-ordinating site management of change program, maintaining site Process Hazard Analysis program
  • Reporting incidents using LANXESS tools, and facilitate investigation of EHS incidents, ensuring that root causes are identified and corrective actions are implemented.
  • Develop, implement and maintain site specific policies and procedures to ensure compliance with Environmental, Health and Safety regulations.
  • Managing waste programs, including inventories, coordinating disposals, completing waste classifications. Ensuring compliance with Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) and WHMIS Regulations.
  • Assist with day-to-day activities associated with LANXESS’ life critical (i.e. confined space, hot work, line breaking, elevated work, electrical safety, LOTO, crane safety, excavation) and other safety procedures.
  • Assist with site emergency preparedness, such as coordinating drills, maintaining fire plans and emergency spill plans.
  • Assist with the occupational health and safety program development.
  • Participate in various Corporate, Customer and Legal audits/site visits.
  • Conduct various internal audits as outlined by site audit plan
  • Drive continuous improvement in the RC 14001 / Responsible Care® management systems through various tools including the identification and control of EHSS aspects & impacts, and the implementation and maintenance of EHSS and operational policies and procedures.
  • Develop and, where appropriate, deliver health, safety, environmental and emergency preparedness/response related training programs to employees, contractors and visitors.

Experience / Skills

  • Bachelors degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Studies, Occupational Health Safety Diploma or Degree, Industrial Hygiene Degree or equivalent
  • 3-5 years practical environmental and/or process engineering experience, preferably in the chemical manufacturing industry.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or equivalent certification considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement environmental management systems and compliance programs.
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario and federal health, safety and environmental legislation.
  • Proficient in Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Excel and SharePoint.
  • Sound organizational skills with the ability to manage a constantly changing workload.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of an organization; effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Valid Driver’s license

The Elmira facility is a state of the art production facility used to manufacture synthetic lubricants and additives for lubricants, plastics and rubber. In addition to the main production facilities we have a comprehensive wastewater treatment system that is used to treat all of the process wastewater that is generated on site, and a groundwater treatment system to remove historic contaminants prior to discharge. The Elmira site is also home to a pilot plant, which is used by our scientists and engineers to develop and test new products and production processes.

Situated on 75 acres (of which 22 acres are used for operations), the manufacturing facility operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our hourly employees are represented by the United Steelworkers Union.

Both sites (Elmira and West Hill) are registered under the ISO 9001 quality management and ISO 14001 environmental management standards.

  • Compensation: We offer competitive compensation packages, inclusive of a global bonus program. The established pay range for this position is Min: $78,400 to Max $125,000. Actual compensation will be based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.
